Osaka is the city that ruins all other cities for you.
After three days eating your way through Dotonbori, wandering the electric alleyways of Shinsekai, and standing slack-jawed in front of a neon-lit takoyaki stall at midnight — everywhere else feels a little flat. Japan's kitchen is not just a travel cliché. It's the real deal.
This itinerary is designed for first-timers on a moderate budget ($70–130/day). It hits the unmissable spots without wasting a single meal.
Day 1: Osaka Castle, Kuromon Market & Dotonbori
Morning — Osaka Castle
Start early at Osaka Castle Park before the tour buses arrive. The castle itself opens at 9am and the museum inside is genuinely excellent — it covers 400 years of Osaka's history and has an elevator to the top floor where you get a sweeping view over the city.
Budget about 90 minutes here. Skip the overpriced souvenir shop at the exit.
Pro tip: Get the Osaka Amazing Pass — it covers free entry to the castle museum and unlimited subway rides for ¥2,800/day. Pays for itself by lunchtime.
Lunch — Kuromon Ichiba Market
A 10-minute subway ride south, Kuromon Market is one of the best food markets in Japan. Arrive hungry.
Must-eat list:
- Tuna sashimi on the spot (Yamamoto Merchant, look for the line)
- Tamagoyaki (sweet rolled omelette) — there are multiple stalls, they're all good
- Fresh oysters if you're feeling bold
- Wagyu beef skewers — yes, for breakfast, yes, it's fine
Afternoon — Namba & Dotonbori
Walk south toward Namba. The tourist crowds thicken, but for good reason.
Dotonbori canal is genuinely spectacular — especially the mechanical crab and the giant Glico running man. It's loud and commercial and completely overwhelming, and somehow you'll love every minute of it.
From Dotonbori, cut through Shinsaibashi shopping arcade (covered, great for rainy days) and then walk 10 minutes south to Amerikamura — Osaka's answer to Harajuku, with vintage shops and street art.
Evening — Dine and Drink in Namba
Eat dinner at a standing ramen bar (look for places with curtains and bar stools — the no-frills spots have the best broth). Then head to Hozenji Yokocho — a tiny moss-covered alley of traditional izakayas tucked behind Dotonbori. Order the grilled chicken skewers and sake.
Day 2: Day Trip to Kyoto
Osaka is 15 minutes from Kyoto by Shinkansen (or 30 minutes on the slower Kintetsu line). Going is mandatory.
Fushimi Inari Shrine
Arrive before 8am. The famous tunnel of torii gates at Fushimi Inari is one of the most photographed spots in Japan — and the hordes of tourists taking identical photos all afternoon are a good reason to beat them there. In the early morning, with the orange gates glowing in the mist, it genuinely feels sacred.
Hike as far up as your legs allow. The full circuit takes 2–3 hours but even 45 minutes gets you above the crowds.
Gion & Kinkaku-ji
Spend the afternoon in Gion — Kyoto's geisha district. Walk Hanamikoji Street in the late afternoon when the light is low and you might spot a maiko in full dress (not a guarantee, but possible).
Then head to Kinkaku-ji (Golden Pavilion). Yes, it's touristy. Yes, it's still breathtaking.
Return to Osaka
Back in Osaka by 6pm. Tonight: Shinsekai for kushikatsu (deep-fried everything on skewers) at one of the retro old-school restaurants under the Tsutenkaku Tower. Order the set menu, do not double-dip the sauce.
Day 3: Nara or Universal Studios
Option A — Nara (Recommended for Most)
Nara is 45 minutes from Osaka by direct express train. The deer here are famous — they genuinely bow to request deer crackers, which you can buy at the park entrance — and Todai-ji Temple houses a 15-metre bronze Buddha that puts every other Buddha statue in context.
Spend the morning in Nara, return to Osaka by early afternoon.
Option B — Universal Studios Japan
If your group includes kids (or theme park adults), USJ's Super Nintendo World is genuinely one of the best theme park experiences on earth. Book the Express Pass in advance — the regular queue for Mario Kart can be 3 hours.
Final Evening
End your Osaka trip at the top of the Umeda Sky Building at sunset — two towers connected by a floating garden observatory at 170 metres. Better views than the official Sky Observatory, less crowded, and the ticket is ¥1,500.
Walk back through the underground shopping labyrinth of Osaka Station. Get one last takoyaki from a stall. Miss your flight on purpose.
Practical Tips
Getting around: Osaka Metro is excellent. Buy the Osaka Amazing Pass for unlimited rides + free attraction entry.
Cash: Osaka is still largely cash-based. Bring yen or use 7-Eleven ATMs (they accept foreign cards reliably).
Best neighborhoods to stay: Namba or Shinsaibashi for nightlife access; Umeda for transport links.
Budget: ¥8,000–12,000/day ($55–80) covers accommodation in a mid-range hotel, meals at local restaurants, and transport. Add ¥3,000–5,000 if you're doing USJ or multiple paid attractions.
